For more information on GridPP and the Grid visit our Introduction to The Grid & GridPP page.
In 2008 the Large Hadron Collider will be turned on in Switzerland. This will be the worlds largest particle accelerator and will need massive computing power. GridPP is a UK collaboration of particle physicists building the British part of the Grid which will provide this computing power. The Grid's computer resources are distributed around the world and GridPP gathers data from various sources about all of the sites on the Grid. This data collection means we can monitor the Grid working in near real time.
The RTM "Map" of the Grid
The RTM's view of the Grid is based solely on information retrieved from BDII services and the GoC database. The resulting view is published as XML, and is visible (with some XSLT)
here. We also asked for logos from sites, and those that provided them have their site logo appear in the Java clients and GoogleEarth versions of the RTM, as well as here.
If you have a new site, and it is published in the central BDII, then it should appear in the RTM map within 12 hours. If you wish to add your site's logo, please email us.
If you are a project related to EGEE (i.e. use the same gLite Grid technology), but do not have your BDII in the centralised CERN system, you can tell us and we will add your BDII to our monitoring system.
You can view the real time information in a variety of forms:
2D/3D Java Clients
Using satellite imagery from NASA, these clients display the Grid as it is geographically spread over the world. In near real time (3 minute delay) they show running and scheduled jobs, job transfers and detailed information on Resource Brokers and Computing Elements for each site. Both programs allows you to move around the globe, zoom in on a location, and isolate a particular Virtual Organisation or Resource Broker.
The
3D client is only a standalone application and needs to be downloaded. Please download the appropriate
one of these zip files (according to your architecture) to your computer. It is known that there are problems associated with OpenGL and standard cheaper display drivers. Please
read this if you have problems.
The
2D client (a new 2009/10 version!) can be run as an
application or
launched as an applet.
Please
read the manual to benefit fully from these clients.
(beta) which uses the latest NASA WorldWind SDK is available for download

There have also been some press reports on this visualisation:
Google Earth Overlay
The information is displayed on Google Earth using a KML file.
![[GoogleEarth showing Real Time Monitor information]](/images/googleearth.jpg)
When this file is opened in Google Earth the locations of the Grid sites are added to your Google Earth map.
Clicking on each site gives detailed information on the site, including Round Robin Data of the Computing Element usage over the last two weeks.
If you do not have Google Earth, you can view (with some provisos at least for now, such as malformed balloons and a limitation on the number of pushpins shown at any one time) the maps within Google Maps - you can paste any of the URLs into the search box. A
direct link of the main KML is provided for convenience.
RDTool GridLoad Graphs
Graphs are
available to view, generated using RRDTool, summarising the Grid's activity.
Plots are generated hourly, daily and monthly – showing activity for the last 6 hours, 7 days, and 2 months respectively. Each CE has its own graph, showing all the jobs from different VOs stacked together. Available plots are for Running and Scheduled jobs. The RRD Database is updated every 5 minutes.
You can also add an
iGoogle gadget for your Resource Broker, showing plots of the last 6 hours, to your
iGoogle homepage.
Archived Information
Daily Reports

These provide daily activity analysis for each CE from the Real Time Monitor gathered data. Overview of job success, computation time, breakdown of statistics by VO. Also shows activity of VOs – the jobs they send and their success. Reports are
single page pdf files ready for printing. Files are available for one week only.
Other related bits...
Along similar lines, we have a
GIN map and maps showing
SRM deployment and
LFC deployment. These maps do not display dynamic information, though they are updated daily to reflect changes in the BDII.
